CHARLOTTE, NC-The Piedmont Pride (16-6) on Friday, kicked off a four game weekend series with the first place SBA Bones (17-6). The series started with a doubleheader Friday at Charlotte Christian. The Bones took the first game 12-0, but the Pride bounced back and won Game Two 5-3.
The Pride were outmatched in Game One as Clay Helvey threw a gem for the Bones, allowing only four hits in four innings of work. Cory Conway struggled for the Pride, allowing 13 hits and seven earned runs over four innings.
The Bones led by three after three innings and put the game away with a four runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth inning. First baseman, David Graves, went 3-3 with a homerun and three runs batted in.
The Pride regrouped and took the second game - a critical win for the squad after the blowout loss earlier. Zach English was the starter and pitched very well. After he allowed three runs to score in the first two innings, he regrouped and allowed only a single hit in the next three innings.
Roury Glanton jump started a stagnant offense in the top of the first with a three-run homerun to deep center, his league leading ninth homerun of the season. The 3-0 Pride lead didn’t last for long as the Bones score three runs in the first and second and the game was tied.
In the top of the sixth, with two outs and a runner on first, Josh Baker stepped up in a big moment and hit a two-run homerun over the right center field fence. The Pride took a 5-3 lead, and closer, Tristan Helms, got the final six outs and earned his first win of the season.
Coach Joe Hudak was proud of the way his team bounced back. “It was a really big win for us. I was really pleased how we played the second game after such a bad first game, against a very good ball club.”
The Pride and Bones will be back in action at York Comprehensive High School on Saturday. First place in the SCBL will be up for grabs; the Bones hold only a half-game lead over the Pride. First pitch is at 5 pm.
