CONCORD, NC- The Piedmont (15-5) saw their six game winning streak end on the road Wednesday night as the team lost 10-1 against the Concord Athletics (9-14).
The Pride were the first team to score as Roury Glanton singled into right field and scored leadoff man Connor Wilson in the top of the first. The Athletics would answer and score five runs in the second inning on five hits. The A’s would add a run in the fourth and fifth, and three more in the six to give them a lead that the Pride could not overcome.
The Pride pitching staff struggled surrendering 12 walks in the game - a season high. Starter Steven Estep struggled through 3.2 innings giving up six earned runs.
The batters, after hitting six homeruns in yesterday’s doubleheader, were limited to nine hits and a lone run scored. The Pride weren’t able to string enough hits together to get runners on base into scoring position, and as a result, 15 runners were left on base.
Coach Joe Hudak acknowledged it just wasn’t their night, “We just got beat in every phase of the game. It was one of those games. I don’t like them, nobody likes them, but it’s just part of the game. We’re going to put it behind us and get ready to play this weekend.”
Glanton and Tee Dubose collected two hits apiece, and Hayden Smith pitched for the first time this season. In an inning and a third, Smith didn’t allow a hit and struck out a batter.
The Pride now turn their attention to a four game weekend series against the SBA Bones (15-5). The first two games will be played on the road at Charlotte Christian on Friday. First pitch is at 5 pm.
