The Piedmont Pride Baseball team had six players selected to the Southern Collegiate Baseball Leagues Allstar team. Pitchers Colby Stuart and Dawson Gause headlined those selected. Three infielders were selected from the Red and Blue: Ben Wetenhall, Scottie Lee, and Mark Engel. Brayden Lyman was the only outfielder selected.
The SCBL Allstar team will head to Cary, North and take on the Valley League on Monday, July 15th at 4:00 pm. They will then take on the Cal Ripken league on the 16th at 4:00 pm at the USA Baseball complex in Cary, North Carolina. More information can be found on the SCBL website: scull.pointsreaksites.com.
The Mooresville Spinners had eight members chosen to the SCBL Allstar roster, while the Pride and Carolina Vipers followed close behind with six each. The Concord Athletics, Charlotte Crushers, Statesville Owls, and Lake Norman Copperheads all had two players selected.
Let’s learn a little bit more about the Red and Blues Allstars:
Colby Stuart: Colby Stuart has been one of the best starting pitchers for the Pride this summer. Stuart ranks first in the SCBL in wins (5), strikeouts (40), and is third in ERA (1.13). Stuart who attends East Tennessee State University has been one of the most dominant pitchers in the SCBL this year.
Dawson Gause: Gause leads all pitchers in the SCBL in earned run average with a mark of 0.37 in 24.2 innings of work. Dawson is 2-0 on the season in eight appearances for the Red and Blue and has recorded one save on the season. The Belmont, NC native attends Tusculum college.
Ben Wetenhall: The College of Charleston attendee ranks first in the SCBL in doubles and top 10 in the league in RBI’s, and batting average. Wetenhall has appeared in 25 games this summer, collecting 32 hits, driving in 16, and posting a .340 batting average. “It’s a good opportunity to go out and have some fun playing baseball with some of the best guys in the league” Wetenhall had to say after finding out he made the Allstar roster.
Scottie Lee: The Mars Hill University infielder has been a constant force to be reckoned with in the middle of the Pride line-up this summer. Lee leads the Southern Collegiate Baseball League in runs driven in with 28 RBI’s on the season. Lee also sits in the top five of the league in homers with five.
Mark Engel: Engel, who is know for his soft hands and defensive abilities at the shortstop position, has caught fire at the plate this summer. In 25 games in the Red and Blue this summer, Engel ranks in the top five in batting average (.398), stolen bases (16), and RBI’s (19). The Middle Tennessee State transfer is very excited for a few days in Cary, NC.
Brayden Lyman: the outfielder for the University of West Alabama has shown this summer why he was one of the most sought after players from the state of Florida last year. Lyman ranks top three in batting average with a post of .424. Lyman sits in second place in the RBI category, behind his teammate Scottie Lee, with 23 runs coming in off the right handers bat.
