YORK-The Piedmont Pride, after having five games cancelled the past week due to rain, finally saw some action with a doubleheader Saturday. The two games against the Charlotte Galaxy went the Pride’s way by the scores of 11-0 and 4-3.
“It was just good to get back on the field, it seemed like forever since we played. It was good for us to get out here, good for us to play, and good for us to get two wins,” Coach Joe Hudak commented.
If there was any rust it didn’t show in the first game as the Pride played a good all-around game. The offense was headlined by Connor Wilson, Kitt Capell, and Tee Dubose. Wilson hit a two-run triple in the second, and Capell and Dubose chipped in with homeruns of their own.
Cory Conway had another dominant start. The lefty struck out eight batters over five innings and walked one. He lowered his ERA to 1.39 and improved his impressive strikeout to walk ratio to 21-3.
“Cory has thrown really well the last two times out, and Zach has thrown real well all year. We have pitched really well,” Coach Hudak said. “We’re going to have a lot of games coming up, so we’re going to have a lot of depth in our pitching staff.
Game Two was a close back and forth game that saw each team take the lead late in the game. The Pride were up to 2-1 in the sixth inning and then the Galaxy took the lead with a two-run double by Aaron Harper. After the leadoff man reached base Joe Campagna blasted a two-run homerun to give the lead back to the Pride 4-3. Tristan Helms closed out the game in the seventh to earn his first save of the season.
Despite five fielding errors, a season high, the pitchers were able to limit the mistakes by only allowing five hits. Zach English surrendered one earned run, and Alex Nodarse earned the win in relief.
The Pride will be back in action as they take on the Carolina Vipers on Tuesday June 27th. The doubleheader from Charlotte Latin School will start at 5 pm.
